Walter Henry De Combat School

The Walter Henry De Combat School, located in Cite Soleil,  is a densely populated shanty town without running water, sewers, and few schools.  Cite Soleil is one of the poorest slums in the Western Hemisphere built on the site of a garbage dump for the city of Port Au Prince. The area is know for a history of gang violence and political turmoil.

This faith-based school offers local children the opportunity to rise out of poverty by giving them an education and tools needed to succeed in life.

Though the school has faced typical challenges associated with extreme poverty, it has also been battered by hurricanes, which buried the entire region under a few feet of water. On top of a major storm clean up, Covid 19 ran full steam throughout the community.

Faced with a rapidly changing political climate after the president of Haiti was assassinated, law and order eroded, gangs took over the area, and many families were driven out of the cities and into seclusion in the countryside. With many students relocating, the school responded by supporting students with food assistance, clothing and travel.

Bread of Compassion has stood with the school through its wonderful and its challenging seasons and the school continues to be operational thanks to the support from Bread of Compassion and its generous and faithful supporters.
